• So, you’ve sworn in as the mayor of New York. Congratulations.
• Thank you.
• You swore on the Constitution?
• No, the Koran.
• Really? Is that normal?

• I can’t say.

• Wow, your LGBT constituents must have been thrilled.

Mamdani doesn’t answer.

• I heard that you dismissed the accepted definition of anti-semitism.
• Yeah, we wanted a broader view, one that considered other people’s perspective.
• Like whom? Hama’s perspective?

Mamdani doesn’t answer.

• Talking about perspectives, there was an incident involving pro-palestinian protesters. They stood in front of a synagogue and threatened worshippers in there. The police took forever to arrive at the scene.
• This is America. People have a right to protest.
• We’re talking about a synagogue here. These people were protesting against what? The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?
• There was info that Israeli real estate agents were conducting a campaign at the synagogue.
• I see your point. You demonize Israel, and yet Israel finds a way not only to continue, but to prosper. That must hurt your ego, right?
• I’m not the only one who criticizes Israel.
• We’re talking about a synagogue here. Women and children were there. And they felt that their lives were in danger. Were you informed about Australia’s terrorist attack durng Chanukah? If you don’t want an American version of that, you’d better change your speech.

Mamdani doesn’t answer. He just smiles.

• Ok, this is going nowhere. Let’s talk about your big plan for affordability.
• Yeah, that’s right. I’m going to turn this city affordable to everyone and not just to rich people.
• I see. And this plan involves freezing the rent prices?
• Well, it’s not official, but it’s being considered, yes.
• The landlords must be thrilled. Not to mention you might have problems with a little detail called Constitution.
• The Constitution is not carved on stone.
• But it’s not carved on liquid paper, either. People have rights, even evil landlords.

Mamdani doesn’t answer. He gives me another fabricated smile.

• And what about your idea of free public transport? Where is the money coming from?
• We have a group studying this.
• Have they studied public deficit? Just last year the city had a two billion deficit. It may rise to ten billion in the coming years.
• Well, the time has come for the rich to pay a more appropriate tax.
• And what if they don’t agree?
• It’s not their call. I’m the mayor. I decide.
• Well, again, you may discover that little detail standing in your way.
• What little detail?
• The Constitution.
• I’m the mayor. People of New York elected me.
• Yeah, people in all their diversity. But looking at your staff, it looks like they feel more comfortable with sharia law than with American Constitution.
• Ah, come on. I even visited the Beit Chabad and the Rebbe’s graveyard.

— Falando em perspectivas, houve um incidente envolvendo manifestantes pró-Palestina. Eles ficaram em frente a uma sinagoga e ameaçaram os fiéis que estavam lá dentro. A polícia demorou uma eternidade para chegar ao local.

— Isto é a América. As pessoas têm o direito de protestar.

 — Estamos falando de uma sinagoga. Essas pessoas estavam protestando contra o quê? O Deus de Abraão, Isaque e Jacó?

— Havia informações de que corretores de imóveis israelenses estavam fazendo uma campanha na sinagoga.

— Entendo seu ponto. Você demoniza Israel, e mesmo assim Israel encontra um jeito não só de continuar existindo, mas de prosperar. Isso deve ferir seu ego, não é?

— Eu não sou o único que critica Israel.

— Estamos falando de uma sinagoga. Havia mulheres e crianças lá. E elas sentiram que suas vidas estavam em perigo. Você foi informado sobre o ataque terrorista na Austrália durante o Chanucá? Se você não quer uma versão americana disso, é melhor mudar seu discurso.

Mamdani não responde. Ele apenas sorri.

— Ok, isso não vai levar a lugar nenhum. Vamos falar sobre seu grande plano para tornar a cidade acessível.

— É isso mesmo. Vou tornar esta cidade acessível a todos, e não apenas aos ricos.

— Entendo. E esse plano envolve o congelamento dos preços dos aluguéis?

— Bem, não é oficial, mas está sendo considerado, sim.

— Os proprietários devem estar radiantes. Sem mencionar que você pode ter problemas com um pequeno detalhe chamado Constituição.

— A Constituição não está gravada em pedra.

— Mas também não está gravada em liquid paper. As pessoas têm direitos, até mesmo os proprietários malvados.

Mamdani não responde. Ele me dá outro sorriso forçado.

— E quanto à sua ideia de transporte público gratuito? De onde virá o dinheiro?

— Temos um grupo estudando isso.

— Eles estudaram o déficit público? Só no ano passado, a cidade teve um déficit de dois bilhões. Pode chegar a dez bilhões nos próximos anos.

— Bem, chegou a hora de os ricos pagarem um imposto mais apropriado.

— E se eles não concordarem?

— Não é decisão deles. Eu sou o prefeito. Eu decido.

— Bem, novamente, você pode descobrir que esse pequeno detalhe está atrapalhando.

— Que detalhe?

— A Constituição.

— Eu sou o prefeito. O povo de Nova York me elegeu.

— Sim, pessoas em toda sua diversidade. Mas, olhando para sua equipe, parece que eles se sentem mais à vontade com a lei da sharia do que com a Constituição americana.
